Music Therapy

Music therapy is the creative use of music to promote health and wellness. Trained music therapists create musical experiences with clients to facilitate positive change and enhanced quality of life.

Music is a dynamic medium and can be used therapeutically in many different ways.  It can help us to communicate, it affects our moods, and it stimulates many areas of the brain. Music can help us to build motivation and enhance our ability to be in the present moment.

Since 1999, my music therapy practice has allowed me to worked with an extremely diverse population of individuals from all walks of life. I am located in beautiful White Rock, BC and work with an amazing set of clients in the area.

My spectrum of professional practice includes work in the following areas of specialty:

  • Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Brain Injury
  • Cognitive Impairments
  • Hospice & Palliative Care
  • Neurological Diagnoses
  • Oncology
  • Substance Use Disorder

I take a client centred approach to my practice. Through addressing the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of a group or individual, I create a personalized treatment plan that is relevant and specific to each of my clients.

Techniques that I use in music therapy sessions vary according to the particular needs of a client and no session sounds the same! My therapeutic music work can include:

    • Instrumental improvisation
    • Songwriting and composition
    • Active listening, guided imagery, lyrical analysis and meditation

    More Background:

Music has always played an integral role in my life. As a teenager, I noticed the profound positive impact that my piano playing and singing had on my grandfather who was suffering with dementia. How his eyes would light up, followed by the tap of a toe, a smile, hum or sway.

It was then that I made the decision to pursue a career in music therapy.

After earning my Bachelor of Music Therapy at the University of Windsor, I completed a one-year internship with JB Music Therapy in Calgary. My early career involved working with children and adults with brain injuries and other neurological conditions, developmental disabilities and mood disorders.

Later, in my own private practice, I continued working with a diverse variety of clients in community based settings like hospitals, care facilities, group homes, schools and camps.

Highlights of my work on the prairies include piloting a music therapy program in oncology at Alberta Children’s Hospital, a grant to work at Calgary’s Mustard Seed Shelter, and extensive work with Kids Cancer Care of Alberta, the Society for Treatment of Autism and the National Music Centre.
